While Draymond Green may be grabbing today’s headlines for moving to the 3rd spot in Golden State Warriors’ all-time assist leaderboard. He still doesn’t hold the record for the most assists in a game. That record is held by former Orlando Magic player and Milwaukee Bucks coach Scott Skiles. Skiles gave 30 assists in a game against the Denver Nuggets in Dec 1990 while playing for the Orlando Magic.
As a point guard, Skiles played for teams including the Milwaukee Bucks, Indiana Pacers, Orlando Magic, Washington Wizards, and Philadelphia 76ers throughout the course of a ten-year NBA career. Scott Skiles was hired by the newly created Orlando Magic in 1989 to serve as a backup point guard, but it wasn’t until the 1990–1991 season that Skiles became the team’s permanent starting point guard.
In the current season, Tyrese Haliburton leads the list in both the number of assists given this season (325) and the number of assists per game (10.5). He’s closely followed by Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks (9.9) and Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets (9.5).
However, when all-time Stats are concerned John Stockton has 15,806 assists overall, more than 3,000 more than Jason Kidd, who has the second-highest total in the NBA (12,091). Stockton even holds the all-time record for most assists in a season and assists per game which he achieved in the 1990-91 season.
With 19.6 seconds remaining in a 155-116 victory over the Denver Nuggets on December 30, 1990, Skiles found teammate Jerry Reynolds, giving him his 30th assist of the contest. This accomplishment shattered the previous NBA record of 29, which Kevin Porter of the New Jersey Nets achieved in 1978.
In 44 minutes of play, Skiles had 30 assists, 22 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals. He passed for more than twice as many assists as the opposition side, managing 14 assists in the first half, 10 assists in the third quarter, and 6 assists in the fourth quarter
When the Indiana native effortlessly doubled his scoring and assist totals from the previous season, he won the NBA Most Improved Player award in 1990. Scott played in the NBA until the 1995–1996 season, when a shoulder injury sidelined him.
Skiles made his NBA comeback as an assistant coach with the Phoenix Suns. In 1999, Skiles was given the opportunity to become the team’s head coach. He is presently working to create a golden era for the youthful and gifted Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference. He is now one of the most well-respected coaches in the NBA. The Chicago Bulls and Milwaukee Bucks are two of the previous clubs he has led.
