The Scorpion King cast has continued to receive its flowers even after 21 years of the movie’s release. The Scorpion King as we all know, is an action-packed movie of the early 2000s that brings together ancient civilisations, epic battles and a dash of humour. 

The film follows Mathayus, played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, a skilled warrior, seeking revenge for his brother’s death. Set in a mythical ancient world, Mathayus is hired to assassinate an evil ruler but things take a turn when he discovers the ruler’s true intentions involve a dangerous alliance with a sorcerer.

Scorpion King plot

Here’s the scoop: Leading a group of fighters, a cruel guy by the name of Memnon decides to conquer everything in sight. Local tribes are dispersing like flies and because people believe Memnon has magic on his side, none of them are bold enough to fight him. Then comes the three heroes: Mathayus, his half-brother Jesup and their friend, Rama. King Pheron hires the last three authentic Akkadians to kill Memnon’s sorcerer in exchange for a cool 20 blood rubies.

They enter Memnon’s base secretly but Takmet, Pheron’s son, turns coat, alerts Memnon and mayhem breaks out. Things quickly turn violent when Jesup gets the short end of a sword and Rama receives an arrow to the chest.

Mathayus is left standing at this point, feeling both driven and a little irritated. He has a date with revenge and Cassandra is the sorceress who is on the target list. Although she possesses a talent for foretelling combat results, she has been Memnon’s prisoner for all eternity. Being the brave man that he is, Mathayus becomes entangled, gets buried up to his neck in the desert and has to fight fire ants at daybreak.

The horsethief, Arpid, aids Mathayus in getting away. Mathayus is determined to complete the task he began and exact revenge for his brother’s murder.

He found his way to Gomorrah, Memnon’s stronghold, secretly. With Cassandra at his side, Mathayus manages to shoot several arrows, avoids having a little hand sliced and receives some assistance from a streetwise youngster.

But Memnon, on the other hand,  would not allow them to go off into the sunset. He pursues Mathayus with his henchmen and sends a warrior called Thorak, who is brandishing an arrow with a scorpion’s poison tip. After some cunning manoeuvres, Mathayus leads the villains into a cave in the middle of a sandstorm and eliminates Thorak’s crew—but not before taking a hit from that lethal venom.

And that is where the major action happens, with Mathayus confronting the unknown: His wounds from poison and Memnon still present. Watching it is worthwhile and it was The Rock’s first leading movie role. Despite receiving mixed reviews, The Scorpion King made $180.6 million worldwide.

This classic movie was graced by several top-notch thespians and has never ceased to be mentioned in movie conversations, even after 20 years of its release.
