Idaho joins lawsuit against US Education Department's Title IX rules

The State of Idaho has joined the Title IX lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education challenging the coming expansion of protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Idaho joins Louisiana, Mississippi, and Montana in the lawsuit that challenges the new Title IX regulations expanding protections to LGBTQ-plus students, and prohibits schools that receive funding from the federal government from discriminating based on sex in school activities and programs.

The lawsuit claims the consequences of the new Title IX regulations, set to go into effect in August, will be severe and force boys and girls to share bathrooms and locker rooms with the opposite sex. The filing also claims it raises concerns about free speech by requiring students and teachers to use "preferred pronouns".

In addition, the lawsuit raises concerns about parents' rights to know if their child receives "gender-affirming" counseling through school.

The regulation, if it goes into effect, will also expand protections of sexual assault victims and rolls back protections for students accused of sexual misconduct implemented during the Trump administration.
